Piggable Y’s
BKW has been providing Piggable Y’s to the pipeline industry for over 30 years. All of our Y’s are custom designed and fabricated to meet the customers’ requirements. The purchase of a Y includes design, fabrication, testing and engineering history. The engineering history pack includes a drawing, MTR's, weld inspection reports on all pressure welds, and hydrostatic test reports.
Piggable Y’s are used in gas gathering systems that require periodic pigging to remove liquids. They will replace a lateral line receiver trap located at a mainline. The pig chasing liquids in the lateral line will enter the mainline and continue chasing liquids to the processing plant receiver trap. This method allows reduction in the liquid storage section of the slug catcher. Please see Piggable Y and Pig Trap Comparison.
The cost of a Piggable Y is approximately a fourth of the cost of a pig receiver. With the elimination of a receiver trap, additional savings are made due to pig retrieval expense being eliminated along with the aboveground appurtenances and the access road to the receiver trap; thus, the use of a Piggable Y allows for considerable cost savings.
BKW Piggable Y’s are equipped with reinforcement rings to protect the crotch weld. Should a pipe stress force the Y legs to separate, the ring will provide sufficient support to cause the pipe to buckle before the crotch weld fails. Hydrostatic tests are performed on every Y before shipment, this ensures the integrity of the Y.

Pig and Y Compatibility
BKW Y’s are fabricated using 3D radius bends to allow the passage of smart pigs. 3D bends reduce the pressure drop required to move the pig through the bend. BKW does not recommend larger radius bends because the longer the radius, the longer the bowl length and the more difficult to pass standard pigs due to low flow rates and excessive interference.
