Slug Catchers

BKW designed and developed a Mono-riser Slug Catcher that is capable of receiving high velocity slugs without blow-by. When the slug pig arrives, the liquid and gas velocities become very violent and multiple riser slug catchers will have blow-by. The BKW Mono-riser Slug Catcher received flow rates that varied from 300 to 750 MMCFD at an operating pressure of 750 to 1500 PSI without blow-by.

BKW’s design utilizes a slug separator, storage runs, liquid well and a final separator. The slug catcher developed by BKW uses a single slug separator for removing the liquid slugs from the gas stream. This style of slug catcher does not use the finger style to reduce gas velocity below liquid carrying capacity. The unique design uses the momentum of the liquid slug velocity to carry the liquid slug past the Mono-riser. The Mono-riser has been designed internally to twist the gas flow and cause fallout of large droplets. This leaves only entrained liquid in the gas and this small amount is removed in the final liquid/gas separator. The advantage of the BKW style is reduced cost and elimination of the need for downstream liquid knockout drums.
